How to Maximize a Short Workout

One of the biggest challenges of getting fit is finding the time to exercise.  But, even if you only have 20 minutes, you can get in an effective, heart-pumping workout.  Here are some tips for making the most out of your workout when you’re short on time. No excuses!

Try High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) 

HIIT is a super effective way to burn loads of calories in a shorter amount of time. HIIT is all about spurts of speed, power and intensity followed by a short active recovery.  According to studies, just 15 min of HIIT is more effective than jogging at a steady pace on the treadmill.  

 

Up Your Resistance 

Add weights to your routine to increase calorie burn and help build more strength.  You don't to do sprints to rev your heart rate.  Doing resistance training at a fast pace will increase your heart rate and increase your metabolism long after your workout is over.  If you don't have weights or want to do a cardio workout, try adding an incline to your walk or run for added resistance.  

 

Keep Rest to a Minimum 

You have to make the most of the little time you have, so keep rest between exercises to an absolute minimum.  It's best to have a solid plan going into your workout so you can move seamlessly from one move to another.  

 

Turn Your Living Room Into a Gym 

Well...no, you don't need to put a treadmill next to the couch, but all you need is a small space to perform simple, yet effective exercises without having to travel to a gym.  Bodyweight exercises, such as squats, push-ups, jumping jacks, and sprinting in place can all be done in the comfort of your home.
